HUNTSVILLE – Defending Class 7A girls’ state soccer champion Vestavia Hills broke open a 1-1 tie with James Clemens in the 29th AHSAA State Soccer Championships Class 7A girls’ semifinals Friday with three goals in the span of four minutes and closed with a 5-1 victory.
The Lady Rebels (21-0-0) advanced to the Class 7A state finals to face McGill-Toolen Catholic (19-5-4), a 2-0 winner over Auburn in the other girls’ semifinal, Saturday at noon.
The 29th AHSAA Class 6A Girls’ Soccer Championships got underway Thursday with semifinal matches in Classes 1A/3A and 4A/5A for boys and girls. Friday’s schedule includes Class 6A and Class 7A boys’ and girls’ semifinals as well as the 1A/3A and 4A/5A girls’ and boys’ championship matches.

With the victory, Vestavia Hills, coached by Brigid Meadow, extended its current winning streak to 27 in a row – dating back, ironically, to a 3-2 loss to James Clemens on April 13, 2018 in a regular-season match played at Madison.
The Rebels took the early lead Friday on a goal at 14:29 by sophomore midfielder Kaylee Dressback.  The Jets (13-4-2), coached by Erin Riddle, recovered quickly tying the score at 1-1 just 29 seconds later on a goal by senior forward Hannah Smid.

The two teams were still deadlocked at intermission, but Vestavia over to start the second period when senior Carolina Causey scored at 46:59 to take the lead 2-1. Lizzie Hill, a senior forward, added the Rebels’ third goal at 50:49 and sophomore Alison Stubbs drilled a pass from Causey into the net 41 seconds later to make it 4-1.  Senior Georgia Kamburis closed out the scoring with Vestavia’s final goal at 72:08.
James Clemens’ goalkeeper Leeann Price finished with eight saves and the Rebels’ keeper Anna Woodson had six. Both teams were aggressive on offense with Vestavia Hills taking 20 shots with 14 on goal and James Clemens had 12, nine on goal.

Class 7A Girls’ Soccer Semifinals
McGill-Toolen Catholic 2, Auburn 0
HUNTSVILLE – McGill-Toolen Catholic (19-5-4) scored a goal in each period and limited Auburn (17-7-3) to just two shots on goal for the entire 80 minutes to advance to Saturday’s AHSAA Class 7A girls’ state championship match with a 2-0 win.
McGill-Toolen, coached by Cheryl Flores, took the lead in the first period when sophomore Caroline Naman scored at 30:18.  The final goal came at 67:01 when Naman passed to eighth grader Anna Adams, who drilled the shot into the net.
Auburn senior goalkeeper Hannah Biglow had nine saves for the game, and Jackets goalkeeper Bailey Dixon had two.
McGill-Toolen Catholic won its only 7A state championship in 2017.
