North Boys’ and Girls’ All-Star Teams Claim Wins in Inaugural AHSAA All-Star Tennis Competition

MONTGOMERY – The North boys and the North girls each posted 8-1 victories Thursday at Montgomery Country Club to win the inaugural AHSAA North-South All-Star Tennis competition in All-Star Sports Week history.
   The Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) hosts the North-South All-Star competition held annually at the AHSAA Summer Conference. The conference, which includes more than 4,000 coaches and administrators, is being held at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center through Friday. The
    The all-star competition closes out Thursday with the 60th annual North-South All-Star Football Classic at 7 p.m. at Cramton Bowl.

    The North boys won all six singles matches to win the tennis competition. Matthew Brooks of Daphne was forced into action in doubles play teaming with Wesley Lartigue of Gulf Shores to win6-4, 3-6, 7-5 over Dallas Burkes and Alex Rainer, both of James Clemens. It was the only match the South won. He then closed out the competition with a marathon battle with John Wolf of Briarwood Christian winning the first set 6-2 but lost the match with Wolf winning the final two sets 6-3, 6-3.  Both all-stars received the Best All-Around Plaques presented to one player each from the North and South teams.
    The North girls were led by Spain Park’s Sydney Ellison, who won her singles match of St. Paul’s Episcopal’s Jenna Prater 6-0, 6-4, and then joined Hoover’s Kennedy Ward to beat Whitsett Herring and Rose Nicholas of McGill-Toolen Catholic in doubles play 6-0, 6-1. Ellison was received the North’s Best All-Around Plaque. The South’s Best All-Around recipient was Ellie Slawson of Trinity Presbyterian. She and Wildcats teammate Rylee Tucker played Ji Soo Kim of Randolph and Alyssa Vandiver of Deshler in a doubles match falling 6-4, 6-4.
   Prater and UMS-Wright’s Mary Francis Wood teamed to beat Bella Wimberly of Westminster Christian and Reagan Martin of Cullman 6-0, 6-2 in doubles for the South’s lone win. Wood became the all-star from the Wood family to participate in the North-South All-Star competition. Her brother Hunter played in the 2013 North-South All-Star Football Game, her dad Russ Wood played in the 1979 North-South All-Star Game, and her grandfather Mack Wood, a member of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame, coached in the North-South game twice.
    Coaching the South girls were Meridy Jones of UMS-Wright and Kaylon Cantrell of Prattville Christian. Coaching the North girls were Jessica Freeman of Deshler and Shelly Sumner of Vestavia Hills. Sue Marshall was the administrative coach.
    The North boys’ coaches were Donna Garner of Florence and Jeremy Mears of Briarwood Christian. Chip Travis of Saraland and Lara Patterson of Jemison coached the South boys. Rick Cleveland of UMS-Wright served as administrative coach.
BANQUETS SET FOR FRIDAY:   The AHSAA closed out the Summer Conference Friday with its mandatory principals and athletic directors’ session which includes updates from the AHSAA and the AHSAA Medical Advisory Committee. The day also includes the 12th annual Sportsmanship Luncheon Friday at noon at the Renaissance, which will recognize 99 high schools that completed the 2018-19 school year without an ejection or sportsmanship-related fine. Eight schools, one from each district, will receive the AHSAA Sportsmanship $1,000 Grant for their exemplary commitment to good sportsmanship.
    The AHSAA Championship Coaches Awards Banquet will be Friday night at the Renaissance at 6 p.m. All 2018-19 state championship coaches are being recognized as well as seven individuals who will are receiving the AHSAA Making a Difference Award. Those individuals include:  principal John Hardin of Hackleburg High School (1A); volleyball and basketball coach Lisa Bates of Sand Rock (2A); principal Willie Wright of Pike County (3A); softball coach Chris Goodman, Alabama Christian (4A); football coach Rush Holcomb, Hamilton High School (5A); radio personality D. Mark Mitchell of Opelika (6A); and Jefferson County Schools Athletic Director Ken Storie (7A).
    The AHSAA Officials’ Awards luncheon will close out the week Saturday at the Renaissance at 11:30 a.m.
