Defending Class 2A state champion Elba overcame some spotty free-throw shooting late to edge Vincent 48-45 in the final boys semifinal at the BJCC Legacy Arena Monday night. The Tigers (21-6), coached by Karl Bledsoe, led 26-13 half but managed just 4-of-14 free throws late as the Yellow Jackets (23-10) clawed back to within two. Elba was 9-of-23 at the foul line for the game but shot 51.4 percent from the field. Brosnan Cooks sank two free throws in the final minute to seal the win. He finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers. Grant Akridge added 10 points and Rheem Newson had eight. Vincent, coached by John Hadder, was led by Jacorey Roper’s 14 points and seven rebounds. Vec Hamilton chipped in nine points and Jace Greene had eight. Elba is scheduled to meet LaFayette in the Class 2A finals Friday at 11 a.m. Play continues Tuesday with Class 3A boys and girls semifinals in the first session and Class 4A boys and girls tipping off in the afternoon session.
