Senior Walter Jones, Jr. scored 26 points and Herbert Jones added 16 as Sunshine (28-4) beat Phillips (26-6) in the Class 1A boys state tournament semifinals Monday at the BJCC Legacy Arena. Coach Walter Jones’ Tigers advance to Thursday night’s 6 p.m. finals. Keonta Edwards dominated the boards with 16 rebounds and also chipped in 12 points for Sunshine. Phillips trailed 31-29 at the half. Jake Bonner, one of the Bears’ top players, had 10 points in the first half but only played a minute in the second half and left the game following an injury. Jacob Feltman had 14 points, and Tyler Crumpton 10 for Coach Scott Veal’s Bears. Sunshine, in the state tournament last year, will close at the end of this school year with students transferring to nearby Greensboro High School, according to the plan submitted by the Hale County Board of Education.
