Baker’s Kelsey White Takes Heptathlon Championship with 4,357 Points

AHSAA Heptathlon Championships
  HOOVER – Baker High School junior Kelsey White closed strong Tuesday to capture the AHSAA 2019 Heptathlon Championship with a 4,357 point total over the two-day meet’s seven-event competition at Hoover High School.

      White won the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.71 time and the 200 clocking 25.89 seconds to collect 2,761 points on Monday to lead the competition after the first day. She finished second in the long jump with a leap of 17-01.5 Tuesday, was fifth in the 800 (2:33.93) and 12th in the javelin (73-02).  Junior Claire Frazier Bolton of McGill-Toolen Catholic won the 800 with a time of 2:14.43 – setting a new heptathlon record in that event. The old mark, 2:18.05, was set by Hoover’s Amelia Anderson 14 years earlier in 2005. Bolton finished second in the overall standings with 3,942 points. 

    Cadence Huntsinger, a sophomore at James Clemens, won the long jump Tuesday with a 17-02.75 leap. She finished fourth overall with 3,849 points. Montgomery Catholic senior Isabelle Cochran wound up  third in the final standings with 3,906 points and Falkville senior Kari Watts rounded out the top five with 3,849 points.  Abigail Green of Huntsville won the javelin throw with a toss of 117-08.

     Thirty girls competed in the AHSAA’s 47th Heptathlon competition at Hoover.

     The boys’ decathlon competition was still underway Tuesday afternoon.
