Altamont Moves Girls and Boys Clinch Berths in 1A/3A State Soccer Finals

Play Resumes Friday in 28th State Championships

Class 1A/3A Girls’ Soccer Semifinals
Westminster-Oak Mountain 4. Cottage Hill Christian 0
    HUNTSVILLE – Westminster of Oak Mountain downed Cottage Hill Christian of Mobile 4-0 in the AHSAA 2019 State Soccer Championships Class 1A/3A Girls’ semifinal match to advance to the state championship match Friday to face Altamont at 7 p.m., at John Hunt Soccer Complex. Altamont’s Boys will face Bayside Academy in the 1A/3A boys’ finals at 5 p.m.
     Junior midfield Katie Hoaglund took seven shots on goal and scored Westminster’s first goals – coming in the first half just four minutes apart. She gave the Knights (16-2-1) of Coach Jay Hammond the lead with goals at 14:54 and 18:22. Her second goal came on an assist from senior forward Tori DeanVirginia Welch got the third goal at 42:07 and Hoaglund served the assist to Deen on  the final  goal at the 57:38 mark.
   Cottage Hill (17-5-0) was unable to take a single shot on goal versus the Westminster defense. Warriors’ goalkeeper Meg Hannan had nine saves on goal.


Altamont 2, Westminster Christian 0
    HUNTSVILLE – Altamont posted two goals in the first half and relied on its defense to do the rest as Coach Matt Kirkpatrick’s Knight beat Westminster Christian 2-0.
    Senior Amelia Pak got the first goal just 9:55 into the match at John Hunt Soccer Complex and fellow senior Mimi Davis managed the second  goal at the 36:50 mark. Altamont out-shot the Wildcats 13-4. Westminster (12-8-1) keeper Katherine Jernigan, a junior, had five saves for the match.


 

Class 1A/3A Boys’ Soccer Semifinals
Altamont 5, Collinsville 1
    HUNTSVILLE – Altamont’s boys, coached by Sean Gibson, broke open a 2-0 game with three goals in the second half to move into the Class 1A/3A boys’ state finals Friday at John Hunt Soccer Complex at 5 p.m., to face Bayside Academy.
   Hampton Pak, a sophomore forward, had two goal and senior defender Ashton Collier also had two goals for the winning Knights (15-6-1). Grey Laney opened the scoring with a goal just 4:49 into match. Pak followed with a goal at 10:32 and scored just 10 minutes into the second half to give Altamont a 3-0 lead. Collier closed the scoring for Altamont with both coming less than seven minutes apart ln the second half.
    Collinsville (16-7-0) got on the scoreboard with a goal by Bryan Barrientos at 67:53 of the 80-minute match. Altamont was  perfect 5-of-5 with shots-on-goal.


Bayside Academy 2, Westminster-Oak Mountain 1
    HUNTSVILLE – Bayside Academy (19-2-2) built a 2-0 lead by halftime and staved off Westminster-Oak Mountain’s strong effort in the second half to post a 2-1 win to clinch the final spot in the 1A/3A Boys’ State Championship Match.
    Junior midfielder Sergi Cebrian gave Bayside, coached by Jamie Ferguson, a quick lead with a goal at the 2:37 mark. Sophomore Trey Clements lent the assist. Eighth grader Joey Jones’ pass set up the Admirals’ second goal and Clements pushed it into the net for a 2-0 Bayside lad at the 27:38 mark.
    Westminster (13-7-0) scored quickly in the second half when senior Matthew Krulak scored on an assist from senior Price Leonard just 78 seconds into the final period.
   Shots were hard to come by the rest of the match as both teams relied on stellar defensive play.

Semi-final matches are scheduled 1A/3A and 4A/5A Thursday, May 9; for 6A and 7A, Friday, May 10. Finals will be May 10 (1A/3A and 4A/5A) and May 11 (6A and 7A).
