CLASS 2A FINALS
G.W. Long 3, Addison 1

BIRMINGHAM – G. W. Long senior hitter Mary Beth Long delivered 29 kills and 20 digs as  the Rebels (49-6) ended Addison’s six-year consecutive state championship streak Thursday winning 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 to win the Class 2A state volleyball crown.
The 49th Elite Eight State Volleyball Championships here continue today with state champions in Class 1A and Class 4A closing out the finals tonight. All matches are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network over its subscriber-based program.
The Rebels fell behind early, but Mary Beth Long’s play at the net late in the first set helped G.W. Long settle down as Coach Greg Long’s team closed out the school’s first state volleyball title winning the final three sets.
Addison (49-15) came in with six state titles in a row dating back to 2013 and 11 state crowns in the school’s trophy case. Coach Kayla Woodard has been a part of nine of them either as a player, assistant coach or head coach. Her team eliminated G.W. Long at the 2018 state tourney in the quarterfinals.
Her team used a more balanced attack at the net and finished the match with 51 kills as a team, one less than the Rebels. Savannah Manley had 19 kills, Callie Crider had 14 and Addisyn Smothers had 11. It wasn’t enough, however, to offset the Rebels’ comeback effort.
Emma Claire Long added 10 kills and 14 for G.W. Long, and Makenna Long had 44 assists and 13 digs. Breana Henning had five kills and 15 digs. Morgan Ferguson also served four aces. It was the balanced defense, said Coach Greg Long, that turned out to be the difference.
The Rebels were crowned the Class 2A state softball champions last spring and the basketball team won the South Regional and reached the State Championship semifinals at the BJCC. Most of the girls in the state volleyball finals were members of those teams as well.
