Donoho 3, Westminster-Oak Mountain 2

BIRMINGHAM – Donoho senior Kate Porteus’ strong serves in a come-from-behind fourth set continued in the fifth and final set as the Falcons (44-16) beat Westminster of Oak Mountain 24-26, 25-20, 18-25, 28-26, 15-12 to capture the Class 1A state volleyball championship at Bill Harris Arena Thursday night.
Coach James Clendenin praised the senior, a non-starter who stepped into the important serving role to cap Donoho’s 28-26 comeback in the fourth set and sparked a quick 6-0 lead in the fifth and final set.
Maggie Wakefield and Lily Grace Draper took command at the net and finished with 24 and 22 kills, respectively. Draper also had 15 digs.  Class 1A state tourney MVP and Falcons setter Maggie Miller had 53 assists, many during that stretch, and also had 17 digs. Mya Keel and Ayesha Siddiqua also had 26 and 22 digs to lead the defensive effort. Donoho finished the match with 105 digs, and Westminster (37-13) had 112.
Coach John Jones’ Knights, playing in the state finals in just the fourth year of the school’s volleyball program, got a strong defensive effort from Payton Metcalf and Elizabeth Simpson, who had 21 and 20 digs, respectively. Bailee Acker had 13 kills and 14 digs, and Molly Reynolds had 12 kills and three blocks. Metcalf also had 39 assists and Macy White had nine kills and 11 digs.
The championship was the 11th in Donoho school history and the first since winning back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.
