AHSAA Regional Bowling Championships PELHAM – Vestavia Hills and East Limestone high schools headline the boys’ teams while Thompson and two-time defending champion Southside-Gadsden highlight the girls’ competition as the fourth annual AHSAA State Bowling Championships begin today at Pelham’s Oak Mountain Lanes. All four teams captured regional titles last week with Vestavia and Thompson taking the South Regional crowns. East Limestone and Southside captured North Regional titles. Defending boys’ state champion Buckhorn is also back as one of the 16 boys’ qualifiers. A total of 16 teams qualified for boys’ and girls’ divisions as the state meet kicks of the first-day traditional round of bowling at 12:30 p.m. All 32 teams will be bowling at the same time – with bowlers rolling three traditional rounds. Team totals will then seed each team in a 16-team championship bracket for Friday’s Baker format team competition. Championship match play for boys and girls begins at 8 a.m., Friday, with the finals set for 5 p.m. Teams advancing to the state meet include: Boys’ Division North Qualifiers: East Limestone (Regional Champ); Hewitt-Trussville (Regional Runner-up); Buckhorn; Gadsden City; Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa; James Clemens; Southside-Gadsden; Sparkman. South Qualifiers: Vestavia Hills (Regional Champ); Hoover (Regional Runner-up); Auburn; Baker; Mary Montgomery; Spain Park; Stanhope Elmore; Thompson. Girls’ Division North Qualifiers: Southside-Gadsden (Regional Champ); Hartselle (Regional Runner-up); East Limestone; Etowah; Grissom; Hewitt-Trussville; Pinson Valley; Sparkman. South Qualifiers: Thompson (Regional Champ); Stanhope Elmore (Regional Runner-up); Auburn; Gulf Shores; Oak Mountain; Satsuma; Spain Park; Vestavia Hills.
