NFHS Learning Center Introduces “Officiating Wrestling” and Spanish Translation of “Concussion in Sports” Courses

Contact: Dan Schuster

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (December 19, 2017) — The most popular online education course on the NFHS Learning Center – “Concussion in Sports” – is now available in Spanish at www.NFHSLearn.com. The NFHS also has released “Officiating Wrestling,” which is the seventh sport-specific officiating course available through the NFHS Learning Center.

The NFHS partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2010 to offer “Concussion in Sports.” The free course has since been taken more than 3.5 million times, and with the help of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, is now available in Spanish. This is the first course offered by the NFHS Learning Center in a language other than English.

“We are pleased to offer our very first course in Spanish, as well as continuing to provide additional opportunities for individuals to become involved in professional development,” said Dan Schuster, NFHS director of educational services.

The goal of “Concussion in Sports” is to educate coaches, officials, parents and students on the importance of proper concussion recognition and management in high school sports. The course includes each state’s concussion management requirements, in addition to highlighting the impact of sports-related concussion on athletes. Those who take the course will learn how to recognize a suspected concussion, as well as protocols to manage suspected concussions and the steps used to help players safely return to play.

“Officiating Wrestling” emphasizes the value of a referee’s judgment. To make the correct call, a referee must possess the proper knowledge of wrestling rules and their implementation. “Officiating Wrestling” is designed to help wrestling officials not only understand the rules, but how to properly apply them when in action.

“Professional development is critically important, and we are pleased to add another course for officials to the NFHS Learning Center,” Schuster said. “’Officiating Wrestling’ is a great course for new wrestling officials; however, it also provides great reminders of fundamentals for veteran officials.”

“Officiating Wrestling,” which is also now available through the NFHS Learning Center, costs $20. All members of the NFHS Officials Association are eligible for a $10 discount by entering an NFHS Officials Association registered email at checkout.

After starting with two courses in 2007 through the NFHS Coach Education Program, the NFHS Learning Center now offers 58 online courses – including more than 26 of which are free – and has expanded its reach to contest officials, students, administrators and music adjudicators. Since the launch of www.NFHSLearn.com in 2007, the NFHS has delivered more than six million courses.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 2, 2017) — An alternate two-piece uniform consisting of compression shorts or shorts designed for wrestling and a form-fitted compression shirt has been approved for the 2017-18 season in high school wrestling. Wrestlers will have the option of the new two-piece uniform or the traditional one-piece singlet.

This revision to Rule 4-1-1 was one of 11 rules changes recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee at its April 2-4 meeting in Indianapolis, and all changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

The compression shorts or shorts designed for wrestling shall be school-issued and shall have a minimum 4-inch inseam that does not extend below the knee. The form-fitted compression shirt shall not cover or extend below the elbow and shall have a minimum 3-inch tail. The shirt may be worn under a singlet or with compression shorts or shorts designed for wrestling.

Specific language was developed regarding undergarment requirements for female contestants wearing a one-piece singlet or a form-fitted compression shirt, as well as for male contestants wearing shorts designed for wrestling.

The committee approved use of the alternate two-piece uniform in the hopes of increasing boys and girls participation in the sport after receiving favorable results from experimentation and positive comments from schools, students, coaches and officials.

The committee approved several rules related to minimizing risk of injury in the sport. Rule 4-5-3 now prohibits any activities that promote weight loss or weight gain when an athlete misses weight on his or her first attempt on the scale. In addition to activities that promote dehydration or drinking fluids to gain weight, the rule now prohibits activities such as cutting hair, modifying clothing, etc.

Another change designed to reduce risk of injury was elimination of the straight-back salto, regardless of which body part (head, neck or shoulder) hits the mat first. The straight-back salto in the rear-standing position that brings the defensive wrestler straight back with feet in the air is intended to have the defensive wrestler’s head, neck or shoulder(s) hit the mat first, and is now an illegal move.

In addition, added to the list of illegal holds/maneuvers in Rule 7-1-5 was a front flip and/or front hurdle over an opponent in the standing position.

“The attempt to flip or hurdle an opponent from a neutral position is not only an elevated risk to the wrestler attempting the maneuver, it also places the opponent in a disadvantage position as he or she is not only left to counter the scoring attempt, but is placed in a position of responsibility for not reacting in a manner that may cause a slam or unsafe return to the mat of the wrestler who actually initiated the maneuver,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of sports and student services.

The committee approved two changes in Rule 5-11 related to falls and near falls. In 5-11-1, the shoulders or scapula of the offensive wrestler no longer must be inbounds to earn a fall. The committee agreed that wrestling should continue if the offensive wrestler’s supporting parts remain inbounds and no body part of the defensive wrestler goes off the mat. In 5-11-5, “unless any part of the shoulders or both scapulae of the defensive wrestler is inbounds” was eliminated. If wrestling is continuing during a match, near falls and falls will be awarded/earned regardless of the out-of-bounds line.

In a related rule, Rule 5-15-2b, c was changed as follows: “Near-fall points or a fall shall be earned while the supporting points of either wrestler are inbounds.”

“The committee agreed that offensive wrestling should be rewarded,” Hopkins said. “If wrestling is continuing, as allowed by current rules, and points for escapes and reversals are allowed, the ability to earn a fall or near fall should be there as well, with no deference to the out-of-bounds line.”

Other changes approved by the committee include the following:

·         Rule 5-19-10: The referee no longer may be behind the contestants when starting the wrestlers from the down position, which has led the false starts by one or both wrestlers.

·         Rule 6-6-4a(1) and 6-6-5a(1): Errors by the timekeeper, official scorer or referee must be corrected prior to the offended contestant leaving the mat area and before the start of the next match on that mat.

·         7-6-4d: Stalling occurs when the contestant in the advantage position stays behind the opponent while on his/her feet, making no attempt to bring the opponent to the mat.

“The wrestling rules committee did another phenomenal job in taking the necessary strides to promote participation by approving a two-piece alternate uniform to be worn,” Hopkins said. “The committee also continued its commitment to reducing risk by making the straight-back salto and suplay illegal maneuvers, as well as prohibiting weight loss or gain in the weigh-in area. In addition, scoring a fall or near-fall is strengthened by the modifications to the definition and location of fall and near-fall in our rules book.”

Wrestling ranks seventh in popularity among boys at the high school level with 250,653 participants, according to the 2015-16 NFHS Athletics Participation Survey. In addition, 13,496 girls participate in the sport throughout the nation.

Vestavia Hills, Oxford, Arab Claim AHSAA State Wrestling Championships at Von Braun Center

HUNTSVILLE – Vestavia Hills High School won its second Class 7A state championship in a row, Arab picked up the 1A-5A championship for its fifth consecutive state crown and Oxford posted 195 points to grab the Class 6A state crown as the AHSAA Class 2017 State Wrestling Championships concluded Saturday at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.
Coach Monterrious Adams picked up the first state championship of his head-coaching career as Vestavia compiled 131.5 points to edge runner-up and arch-rival Hoover. The Bucs had 107.5 points, Thompson was third with 97 and Hewitt-Trussville finished fourth with 94. It was the Rebels’ 15th state crown overall, an AHSAA state record.
Coach Michael Pruitt’s Arab Knights extended their state-championship streak to five – scoring 176.5 points with runner-up Cleburne County scoring 123. Tallassee was third with 110 and Alexandria was fourth with 104.5. The Knights won 6A state titles in 2015 and 2016 and the Class 5A crowns in 2013 and 2014. Arab also won the 5A title in 2011.
Oxford, coached by Matt Hicks, captured the school’s first state title in school history with 195 points. Southside-Gadsden was second with 171.5, Pinson Valley was third at 148 and Homewood was fourth with 115.5.
Saturday’s finals were highlighted by Montgomery Catholic senior Zachary Van Alst’s win in the 1A-5A 138-pound finals. Val Alst (67-0) joined an elite group of wrestlers to win six state titles. He beat Hayden’s Chace Phillips (60-2) with a 12-4 major decision.
Upsets were prominent, especially in the Class 6A heavyweight bout and the Class 1A-5A 113-pound finals. Stanhope Elmore junior Jacob Andrews (37-3) beat sophomore Clay Webb of Oxford (56-2) in a 4-3 decision. That match was judged as the best in Class 6A Saturday.
Hayden junior Landon Castleberry (60-9) beat Fultondale junior Macon of Edwards (73-1) of Fultondale in the 113-pound finals with a 16-7 major decision. Edwards was defending state champion after finishing 90-0 in 2016. The winning streak extended to 163 matches until Saturday’s final bout.
In other highlights, Carial Tarter of Mortimer Jordan finished with a perfect 47-0 record  with an 8-6 win over Kolton Scott of Scottsboro (37-4) in the 145-pound Class 1A-5A championship bout. That match was judged the top bout of Class 1A-5A and Tarter earned MVPs for his division with the win.
Ethan Pippin of Westminster Christian (53-0) also finished unbeaten with a win in the Class 1A-5A 170-pound finals. Other wrestlers winning state championships with unbeaten records included 182-pounder Christian Knop of Alexandria (58-0) in Class 1A-5A; Class 6A 182-pound winner Carlos Miguel Figueroa of Homewood (27-0); Class 7A 182-pound senior Brooks Schrimsher of Huntsville (41-0); and Vestavia Hills 220-pound champion James Edwards (421-0). Edwards’ twin brother Jacob Edwards (39-4) was beaten the 285-pound finals by Hoover senior Austin Carter (20-3).
Landon Thompson of Southside-Gadsden (74-2) won the 152-pound Class 6A championship with a technical fall (21-6) at 3:38 over Isaac Jackson of Park Crossing (22-3) and earned Class 6A MVP honors.
In Class 7A, sophomore Sam Latona (71-1) won the 113-pound championship for Thompson pinning Sullivan Tipton of Oak Mountain at 3:32 in the finals. He had most pins in 7A.  Junior Barrett Blakely of Oak Mountain (45-3) was name Class 7A MVP. He won the 160-pound title with a 7-3 decision over Bowman Hill of Vestavia Hills in the championship bout.
Vestavia, Oxford and Arab also swept the AHSAA Duals Tournament first-ever titles earlier this month.

Vestavia Hills, Oxford and Arab Have Comfortable Leads Heading into Saturday’s Final Day of the AHSAA 2017 State Wrestling Tournament

HUNTSVILLE – Oxford accumulated 182 points to take 34.5-point lead in Class 6A while Vestavia Hills (7A) and Arab (1A-5A) had comfortable leads in the other two divisions after Friday’s action at the 62nd AHSAA State Wrestling Championships being held at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.
Wrestling gets underway with consolation finals Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. The championship finals will start at 1 p.m. The finals will be live-streamed by the NFHS Network. Go to  http://www.nfhsnetwork.com/tournament/alabama-winter-championships to access the live-stream.
Southside-Gadsden has 147.5 points, Pinson Valley 138 and Homewood 105.5 to lead the Class 6A team rankings after day two. Defending state champion Vestavia Hills posted 119.5 points as Class 7A got underway Friday. Hoover is second with 91.5 points, Hewitt-Trussville is third with 82 and Thompson is fourth with 73. The Rebels won their 14th state title overall last year – a fitting send off for AHSAA Hall of Fame Coach Steve Gaydosh, who retired as Vestavia’s wrestling boss. Monterrious Adams took over as head coach this season.
Arab, chasing its fifth state championship in a row, built a 46.5-point lead over Cleburne County Friday totaling 161.5 points. Cleburne County had 115, followed by Tallassee (98) and Alexandria (93.5).
Coach Michael Pruitt’s Knights won the 6A state crown in 2016 and 2015 and the Class 5A titles in 2014 and 2013.
All three division leaders captured the first AHSAA Wrestling Duals tournament titles earlier this season.
Coach Matt Hicks’ Yellow Jackets have recorded 20 wins by fall – most of any team in the competition – advanced five wrestlers to the finals Saturday. Among the five is sophomore heavyweight Clay Webb (56-1), who posted his third straight pin to reach the Class 6A 285-pound finals to face Jacob Andrews (36-3) of Stanhope Elmore. Jacobs beat rival South second seed Trent Lolley of Wetumpka 3-2 in the semifinals to set up the showdown with Webb.
A total of eight unbeaten wrestlers will be attempting to close out the season with wins in their respective weight divisions Saturday. Another 11 have just one loss on the year and another, senior Landon Thompson of Cass 6A Southside-Gadsden, is 73-2 on the year at 152 pounds.
Senior Zachary Van Alst of Montgomery Catholic (66-0) will face Hayden’s Chace Phillips (60-1) in the 138-pound Class 1A-5A finals Saturday. Van Alst is attempting to become just the third wrestler in state history to win six individual state titles. He won his first championship as a seventh grader in 2012 and has won every year since.  Macon Edwards of Fultondale improved to 73-0 with a 10-0 major decision win in the 113-pound semifinals. He was 90-0 last season while winning the 106-pound 1A-5A title. He will meet Landon Castleberry of Hayden (59-9) in the championship match.
In Class 7A, sophomore Sam Latona of Thompson (70-1), rolled into the Class 7A 106-pound finals with pins in both his matches Friday.  He is 35-0 against in-state competition this season and 35-1 versus out-of-state competition. Latona’s brother Dominic won the 126-pound 7A state title as a senior in 2016.
And in Class 6A, Southside-Gadsden senior Landon Thompson (73-2) will be trying to win his 74th victory in the Class 6A 152-pound finals versus Isaac Jackson (22-2) of Park Crossing.
Twelve defending champions will be in the finals again Saturday. Brooks Schrimsher of Huntsville (40-0) is in the 182-pound 7A finals after winning the 170-pound crown last season. Vestavia Hills’ James Edwards (40-0) will be attempting to defend the 220-pound title. His twin brother Jacob Edwards (39-3) has also reached the Class 7A 285-pound championship match.
