49TH AHSAA STATE VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS Six of Seven 2018 State Champs Set to Compete for Championship

     BIRMINGHAM – Jasper (62-9) is one of six defending state champions looking to repeat Thursday as the AHSAA’s 49th Elite Eight State Volleyball Championships conclude with seven championship matches at the Bill Harris Arena.
      The Vikings of Coach Bobby Daniels will be facing Faith Academy (45-9) in the Class 5A state championship match at 9:45 a.m., Thursday. Other defending champions advancing through Wednesday’s first two rounds at the Birmingham CrossPlex include Class 2A Addison, Class 3A Montgomery Academy, Class 4A Bayside Academy, Class 6A Spanish Fort and Class 7A McGill-Toolen Catholic.
      Bayside will be facing Providence Christian in the 4A finals with the Admirals hoping to extend their current consecutive state championship winning streak to 18 in a match that is set for the final match of Championship Thursday at 6:30 p.m. All seven championships will be live-streamed over the NFHS Network’s subscriber-based network.      Addison meets G.W. Long in Class 2A at 3 p.m., with the Bulldogs seeking their seventh straight state title. Play gets underway with the Class 3A finals pitting Montgomery Academy and Geraldine at 8 a.m. McGill-Toolen Catholic takes on Mountain Brook in the Class 7A finals at 11:30 a.m., followed by Spanish Fort and Hazel Green at 1:15 p.m. Donoho and Westminster of Oak Mountain play in the 1A finals at 4:45 p.m.
    Semifinal results Wednesday include:

McGill-Toolen Catholic 3, Bob Jones 0:
The defending champion Dirty Dozen (39-8) won 25-21, 25-18, 25-16 with Skyler Bumpers posting 12 kills and Haley Palmer 11 kills and four blocks. Imani Nicholson also had nine kills and 16 digs, and Katie Hemphill had 20 digs. Setter Amelia Boykin also had 12 digs and 31 assists. Juanita Monteiro-Pai totaled eight kills and 13 digs for the Patriots (33-15). Adeline Barnes added 16 assists.
Mountain Brook 3, Hoover 1: The Spartans (58-7) pulled out a 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-11 win over Hoover to advance to Thursday’s finals. Ann Vandevelde had 32 assists and nine digs for Mountain Brook. Teammates Mary Franklin Fowlkes added 14 kills and Celie Field had 10 kills. Setter Aly Durban led Hoover (34-15) with 37 assists and 10 digs. Rya McKinnon totaled 12 kill and four aces and Laurel Burkhardt had eight kills.

Spanish Fort 3, Hartselle 0:
The defending 6A state champion Toros (71-6) won 25-23, 25-16, 25-17 behind the strong play inside by Avery Rogers and Kamble Franette. The duo had 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Libero Meg Brackhan totaled 21 digs and Kayla Keshock had 32 assists. Hartselle (68-11) got nine kills and 19 digs from Hailey Holshauser and 26 assists from Grace Leighton.
 Hazel Green 3, Albertville 0: Gracie Lynn Butler had 24 kills, seven digs, three blocks and three aces as the Trojans (58-8) posted  25-18, 25-12, 25-12 win over Albertville. Catherine Smith also had 31 assists and Hannah Hampel added 11 kills. Albertville (43-12) was paced by Jayden Watkins’ eight kills. Kyla Mayes added five kills and four blocks.

Jasper 3, Alexandria 0: 
Jasper won the semifinal match 25-13, 25-16, 25-13 as McKinley Ferguson and Alex Oliver posted 14 kills each. Setter Temperance Chatman had 30 assists and 10 digs for Coach Bobby Daniels’ defending Class 5A state champions.
Faith Academy 3, Lawrence County 1: The Rams of Coach Claire Elliott had a more difficult time beating Lawrence County (49-19) – squeezing out a 26-24, 24-26, 29-27, 25-23 victory in the other 5A semifinal. Aaliyah Austin recorded 28 kills in the win while Brinkley Hearn had 28 assists, 15 digs and four aces, and libero Kristin Mitternight had 20 assists and 16 kills.
    Coach Robyn Hutto’s Red Devils were led by setter Anna Clair Hutto’s 34 assists, 16 digs and six kills. Sami Parker also had 19 digs. Bailee Pulliam had 12 kills and Lexi Heidt had 10.

Bayside Academy 3, LAMP 0:
The Lady Admirals (55-12) got by LAMP in straight sets 25-12, 25-8, 25-16.  Jacque Martin had 14 kills and seven service aces for Bayside, which has a state-record 27 state titles to its credit. Cotton Thompson and Ells Broadhead each had eight kills and setter Brelynn Dailey had 35 assists. Broadhead also have five aces and the Bayside starters totaled 19 aces collectively. Grace Hoffman’s 15 assists and Olivia Hughes’ five blocks paced LAMP (22-19).
Providence Christian 3, Montgomery Catholic 0: Adleigh Mayes had 34 assists, nine digs and three aces for the winning Eagles (42-12), Autumn Mayes added 20 kills, 13 digs and six aces, and Emma Houston had 25 digs.  Middle hitter Ansley Dean’s 10 kills led Montgomery Catholic (29-12). 

Geraldine 3, Houston Academy 0:
The Bulldogs (42-8) won 25-17, 25-23, 26-24 with Haven Hall accounting for15 kills and eight blocks. Jerika Gary also had eight kills, Jayden Dismukes chipped in 16 digs and Lilly Rowell had six kills and nine digs.
Montgomery Academy 3, St. Luke’s Episcopal 0: The defending state champion Eagles (46-6) posted a 25-13, 25-23, 25-17 win over the Wildcats with Milly Stevenson totaling 36 assists and 14 digs.  The trio of Brooke Horne, Mary Gray Turner and Ann Covern Chapman had 12, 12 and 11 kills respectively. Outside hitter Gracie Sims had 11 kills and 23 assists for the Wildcats (39-11).
Addison 3, Cedar Bluff 0:
The Bulldogs won in straight sets 25-10, 25-18, 25-21. Addisyn Smothers had 11 kills and 11 blocks, Savannah Manley had 10 blocks and eight kills, Callie Crider contributed seven kills, four blocks and nine digs, Macey Butler had 14 digs and Gracie Manley had 28 assists and four service aces. Setter Kyla Oneal had 24 assists to pace Cedar Bluff (42-20). Hannah Cosby and Julianne Wilson had seven and five kills, respectively.
G.W. Long 3, Sand Rock 1: The Rebels (46-6) won 25-14, 30-28, 23-25, 25-18 over stubborn Sand Rock (37-14), Mary Beth Long had 31 kills, most in any match in all classes Wednesday, and Emma Claire Long had 23 kills for G.W. Long. Emmaline Hughes had 18 digs. Morgan Ferguson added six service aces and the Rebels totaled 19 for the match. Caley Garrett had 23 digs, Victoria Collum added 10 kills, 16 digs and 25 assists for Sand Rock. Hannah Davis also had 14 kills and 14 digs and Lanie Henderson, 13 kills.

Donoho 3, Spring Garden 2:
The Falcons (44-18) used its triple-threat front row to post a hard-fought 13-25, 25-18, 26-24, 28-30, 15-6 victory over Spring Garden. Mercy Mangum had 15 kills, Maggie Wakefield and Lily Grace Draper had 14 each in the marathon match. Setter Maggie Miller had 40 assists. Spring Garden (43-19) was led by Haleigh Molock and Alle Jennings with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Neely Welsh had 19 assists and Abbe Steward had 16.
Westminster-Oak Mountain 3, Phillips 1: The Knights (37-17) won 20-25, 25-14, 25-18, 27-25 with Peyton Metcalf notching 18 assists. Molly Reynolds had seven kills and three blocks and Bizzie Simpson served six aces. Alli Temple had 20 kills, 17 digs and 20 assists for Phillips (31-`19), Ally McCollum added 14 kills.
