BIRMINGHAM – Defending Class 2A state champion Addison beat Ariton in the quarterfinals Wednesday and moved to the semifinals at 5:30 Wednesday afternoon at the 49 th annual AHSAA Elite Eight State Volleyball Championships Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Joining the Bulldogs (48-14) of Coach Kayla Woodard in the semifinals are G.W. Long, Sand Rock and Cedar Bluff. Addison 3, Ariton 0: The Bulldogs were very consistent winning 25-12, 25-12, 25-12 over the Purple Cats. Savannah Manley and Addisyn Smothers each had nine kills, and Callie Crider had eight. Manley also recorded eight blocks. Setter Gracie Manley accounted for 34 assists. Ariton (21-10), coached by Terry Goodson, was led by Caroline Hughes’ 3 assists. Blair Hughes and Sarah Snyder also had five kills each. G.W. Long 3, Winston County 1: The Rebels, who won the Class 2A softball title last spring, won the quarterfinal match over Winston County 25-20, 25-20, 18-25, 25-16 to advance to semis to meet Sand Rock. Mary Beth Long had 30 kills and 22 digs and freshman Emma Claire Long totaled 15 kills and 14 blocks. Setter Makenna Long totaled 62 assists, three aces and six digs. Emmaline Hughes also had 36 digs and three aces, and Breanna Henning served four aces and had 11 digs. Winston County (23-19), coached by Tiffany Cole, got a strong performance from Mackenzie Blackwood. The senior had 22 kills and teammate Elle Donaldson had 29 digs. Jenna Downey totaled 27 assists. Sand Rock 3, Cottage Hill Christian 0: The Wildcats of Coach Lisa Bates won 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 with junior Hannah Davis posting 10 kills and 18 assists. Sand Rock (37-13) also a strong defensive effort from Caley Garrett, who had 17 digs. Victoria Collum also had 15 assisted and 11 digs. Cedar Bluff 3, Geneva County 0: The Tigers (42-19), coached by Lyndsey Mullins, downed the Bulldogs 25-12, 25-13, 25-18. Cedar Bluff did not report any statistics. Geneva County (25-13) was led by Karoline Striplin’s eight kills and nine blocks. Hanna Hubbard had nine assists. Coach Karie Striplin in the Bulldogs’ coach.
