     BIRMINGHAM – Phillips High School’s Lady Bears knocked off defending Class 1A champion Pleasant Home in grueling Class 1A quarterfinals match Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the 49th annual AHSAA Elite Eight State Volleyball Championships Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Coach Debbie Grubbs’ Bears meet Westminster-Oak Mountain at 5:30 p.m. in the semis. Donoho and Spring Garden posted quarter-final wins to also advance to the semifinals.
Phillips 3, Pleasant Home 2: :  Ally McCollum and Alli Temple dominated on the net to lead the Bears (31-8) past Pleasant Home (30-5). Temple had 25 kills, 22 assists and eight digs, and McCollum had 18 kills and seven blocks. Phillips won the Class 1A state basketball championship last season.
   Coach Tony Wilson’s Eagles also got a tremendous effort from outside hitter Sarah Guilford, who had 20 kills. Senior setter Peyton Huckabaa added 27 assists and Daisy Cordle had 12 kills.
Donoho 3, South Lamar 0: Setter Maggie Miller totaled 32 assists and four aces in the win for Donoho (42-16). Coach James Clendenin’s Falcons also had a strong effort on the net with Maggie Wakefield notching 14 kills and Mercy Mangum getting 10.
    Coach Jessica Watkins’ Stallions (22-8) were led by by Haylie Crimm’s 22 digs. She also had four service aces. Alex Trull also had 13 blocks, most of any player in the 1A quarterfinals Wednesday.
Westminster of Oak Mountain 3, Athens Bible 2: Westminster (36-12) moved to the semifinals with a tough 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 15-8 win over Athens Bible. The Knights, coached by John Jones, were led by Macy White’s seven kills and six by Virginia Welch. Payton Metcalf had 15 assists. No statistics were provided by Athens Bible.
Spring Garden 3, Millry 0: Coach Ricky Austin’s Panthers won in three straight sets 25-11, 25-13, 25-15. No other statistics were provided.
