T.R. Miller Celebrates 1969 State Title With 'Fireworks'

T.R. Miller’s 1969 Class 2A state championship football team held its 40th reunion last Friday night at Brewton and no fireworks was really needed to celebrate the event.
In fact, all the fireworks needed came on the game’s first two kickoffs.
Anthony Herbert hauled in Calhoun High School’s opening kickoff at the Miller 18-yard line and then sped 82 yards for a touchdown. Calhoun return specialist Rodrecious Bell grabbed the following T.R. Miller kickoff at his own 22-yard line and then broke free for a 72-yard touchdown return. Calhoun, however, missed the extra point and T.R. Miller then waltzed to a 57-6 win.
The game-opening drama capped a big T.R. Miller celebration and earned this week’s AHSAA prep football spotlight.
Coach Jamie Riggs’ top-ranked Class 3A Tigers (6-0) scored five more touchdowns in the first quarter as Herbert finished his night early with 73 yards rushing on six carries with two more scores.
The 1969 state champs were introduced to the crowd during the game. That team won the first of six state titles for the Brewton school. T.R. Miller has won four crowns (2002, 2000, 1994, 1991) under Riggs, whose career record improved to 241-63-0 with the win. He is third winningest active head coach in the state behind Waldon Tucker of Fayette County (294-121-3) and Buddy Anderson of Vestavia Hills (267-110-0).
T.R. Miller’s other title came in 1984. The Tigers also reached the finals in 1986, 1990, 1995, 1996 and 1998. T.R. Miller has won 19 of its last 20 games dating back to 2007.
