Huntsville, McGill-Toolen Capture Swimming Titles


     Huntsville High School captured the AHSAA boys state swimming & diving championship Saturday while McGill-Toolen Catholic swam to the girls’ title as the 2012 state meet concluded its two-day run at Auburn University’s James E. Martin Aquatic Complex.
     The Panthers scored 239.5 points to edge runner-up McGill-Toolen in the boys’ competition. Fairhope finished third in the field of 42 schools competing with 211 points.
     McGill-Toolen piled up 174 points to win the girls’ competition. Saint Paul’s was second with 162 points and Spain Park third with 156. A total of 39 schools competed in the girls’ division.
    Six AHSAA state meet records fell with McGill-Toolen senior Will Glass setting two with his winning times in the 100-yard butterfly (48.21 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (48.41). Spain Park junior Will Freeman also set a new standard in the 200-yard freestyle with his 1:38.22 time.
    Marlin Brutkiewicz, a senior from UMS-Wright, swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.51 for a new record. Paige Madden, an eighth grader on the UMS girls’ squad, set a new mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:50.23 time and also won the 500-yard freestyle.
    Marie Reed, another eighth grader in the competition, won the 100-yard freestyle with a record time of 51.33 seconds.
