Auburn, Huntsville Claim Swimming & Diving Titles
UMS-Wright’s Paige Madden and Spain Park’s Will Freeman each set two state records while the Auburn girls and Huntsville boys captured AHSAA state swimming and diving teams championships Saturday at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center on the campus of Auburn University.
Auburn won the girls’ state championship with 239.2 points. Athens finished second with 154, followed by McGill-Toolen (145.4) in third and Huntsville (140.0) in fourth. A total of 36 girls’ teams competed in the competition held Friday and Saturday.
Huntsville’s boys totaled 261 points to claim the boys’ championship. Bob Jones was second with 234 points, McGill-Toolen (204) finished third and Auburn (193) was fourth.
A total of five state records were set in the girls’ competition and four were established in the boys’ division. Freeman, a senior at Spain Park High School, set a new mark in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:37.31. He also set a new mark in the grueling 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:27.36, which automatically earned him All-America status.
Madden, a freshman, set new marks in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 2:04.13, and also set a new AHSAA mark, in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking 55.37 seconds.
