AHSAA Mourns Death Of Winfield Coach
Joe Hubbert, longtime head football coach at Winfield High School, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, after an extended illness. The AHSAA offers condolences to his family and the Winfield community.
The 1955 graduate of Winfield High School attended the University of Chattanooga before beginning a 28-year coaching career, the last 20 at his high school alma mater.
Hubbert compiled a 132-81-1 record with the Pirates and coached 11 Winfield teams to the state playoffs. His career record of 201-123-6 also included head-coaching stops at Marion County, Eufaula, Deshler and Cochran (GA).
After his retirement he opened and managed the Boar’s Butt restaurant in Winfield, which became an area landmark that was voted one of the state’s top 20 restaurants. Hubbert also dedicated his life to the growth and development of the youth at the Winfield school and community.
He was inducted into the AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and was a charter member of the Marion County Hall of Fame.
Funeral services are scheduled Friday at 7 p.m. with visitation beginning at 4 p.m. at Winfield Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that any donations be made to the Coach Joe Hubbert Scholarship Fund c/o Citizens Bank of Winfield, P.O. Box 550, Winfield, AL 35594.
