AHSAA Mourns The Death of Longtime Official
Longtime AHSAA sports official Rev. John E. Christy, 85, died Thursday at his home in Dothan.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at Kinsey Baptist Church near Dothan at 2 p.m.
Christy, affectionately known as “Brother John,” was an ordained minister who also served as a sports official for more than 40 years with experience in high school, church and recreation sports. He officiated football, basketball, baseball, and softball.
He also served in a leadership role in the Southeast Officials Association and helped set the standard for training of young officials for many years.
“John Christy was the cornerstone of officiating for high school sports in the Wiregrass area for more than two decades,” AHSAA Director of Officials Greg Brewer said. “There were many officials that got into high school officiating because of John. His efforts will always be appreciated and he will be missed.”
An accomplished musician, he touched numerous lives with his service as an official and through his music ministry at several area churches.
Christy was inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
